The Starry Night (Great Art)

THE STARRY NIGHT (Vincent van Gogh, Dutch, 1889)

American singer-songwriter Don McLean's song "Vincent" opens with the lines: "Starry, starry night..." and brings out all the anguish this tortured soul endured. Vincent van Gogh died by his own hand in 1890 at age 37, but not before producing this and about 860 other oil paintings. The one dates to about a year before his death, and depicts the view from the window of his room at a "lunatic asylum" in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. (The village in the middle ground is imaginary.) One of the most recognized paintings in Western art, some consider it the artist's magnum opus.
