ABSTRACT ART (Vocabulary: Art Terms)
Until the 19th century, if an artist painted, say, an apple, he or she usually tried to make it look as much like an apple as possible. This was called Realism. Then some French guys decided to try to give an impression of an apple. This was called Impressionism. In the 20th century, some artists let go of realism completely and started using shape, form, color, and line to create compositions that didn't portray anything that existed in the real word. This was Abstract art, as practiced (at least sometimes) by the likes of Kandinsky, Matisse, Mondrian, Klee, Leger, Picasso, Pollock, and others.
