FIVE IDIOMS USING THE WORD "DOG"

IDIOM: going to the dogs

  • MEANING: becoming bad or worse
  • EXAMPLE: "In this economy, many businesses are going to the dogs."

IDIOM: in the doghouse

  • MEANING: in trouble (like a man kicked out of his house)
  • EXAMPLE: "I stayed out late, so now I'm in the doghouse."

IDIOM: dog eat dog

  • MEANING: very competitive
  • EXAMPLE: "Stay out of the restaurant business; it's dog eat dog!"

IDIOM: the big dog, or the top dog

  • MEANING: the most important person
  • EXAMPLE: "Jeff Bezos is the top dog at Amazon."

IDIOM: crooked as a dog's hind leg 

  • MEANING: extremely dishonest (dogs' back legs are bent, not straight; "crooked" here means "dishonest")
  • EXAMPLE: "The former senator is in jail; he was as crooked as a dog's hind leg."
