All that glitters is not gold (Proverb)

ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD

  • Shakespeare used the expression in The Merchant of Venice, though slightly different: "All that glisters is not gold."

Meaning: Gold may shiny and attractive, but there are other things of equal or greater importance.

Mini-Dialogue: Leo's friend Linda has been working a lot of overtime...

Leo: Hi, Linda. How's it goin'?
Linda: Ugh. I've been working too many hours.
Leo: Tough boss, huh?
Linda: Yes, she is! I'm my own boss! But I'm working so hard that I never see my daughter. Sometimes my husband puts her to bed before I get home!
Leo: Well, remember what Shakespeare said: "All that glitters is not gold."
Linda: I see what you mean. Watching my daughter grow up is important, too.
