The Bard of Avon

The Bard of Avon: a nickname for Shakespeare, who was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. "Bard" means "poet." Most of the words in Shakespeare's plays are in verse, and he wrote other poems as well. Author George Bernard Shaw said people "worshipped" Shakespeare, calling it "bardolatry."
